Cortland State Skates to a 2-2 Draw with Buffalo State

Sophomore Shannon Hakes (Rochester/Rochester Edge) scored on the power play at seven minutes, 32 seconds of the third period to earn Cortland a 2-2 tie versus Buffalo St. Friday night in ECAC West action. The Red Dragons' record now stands at 1-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the conference, while the Bengals are 0-4-1 and 0-2-1.

Junior Nicole Ruddy (Utica/Mohawk Valley Herricanes) also scored a goal for Cortland. Senior Maggie Welker (Rochester/Syracuse Stars), junior Maggie Henty (Syracuse/Syracuse Stars), sophomore Mallorie Maguire (Potsdam/North Country Ice Storm) and freshman Carolyn Wolcott (Syracuse/Northwood School) each collected an assist. Senior goalie Melissa Stern (Shoreham/Long Island Waves) made 15 saves.

For the Bengals, freshman Leah Knott (Sinking Spring, PA/Princeton Tiger Lillies) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Katie Olejarski (Rockford, IL/Rockford U19) scored a goal. Senior Kelsey Truran (Berkley, MI/Victory Honda) and sophomores Gillian Toneguzzo (Caledonia, ON/SUNY Oswego) and Marissa McMullan (Haileybury, ON/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) collected one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Alyssa Koniar (New Berlin, WI/RIT) stopped 29 shots.

Olejarski gave the Bengals a 1-0 lead at 8:07 of the first period while on a two-player advantage when she lifted a shot into the upper corner right in front. Ruddy Tied the game at 1-1 at 8:20 of the second. Wolcott took a shot from the left point that was deflected by a defender. The puck slid to Ruddy on the right side who buried a shot for her first goal of the season.

Buffalo St. regained the lead at 18:42 of the second on a delayed penalty with an extra skater on the ice. Knott knocked in a loose puck in front. Hakes tied the game while Cortland had a two-player advantage when she put in a rebound right on the edge of the crease.

Each team had a good scoring chance in the overtime but couldn't capiatalize. Cortland outshot the Bengals, 31-17, in the game.
