Championship Game Recap

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Tournament MVP Kelly Finn netted the game-winning goal in the first half Sunday to lift third-seeded and visiting Nazareth to a 1-0 women's soccer triumph over top-seeded Brockport in the championship game of the ECAC Upstate Tournament.

Nazareth recorded its third straight shutout win in the tournament to claim its second ECAC championship in the last three seasons. The Golden Flyers finished the season at 14-6-2 and also blanked Keuka, 7-0, and Fredonia, 1-0 (ot), earlier in the tournament.

Nazareth (14-6-2) scored seven minutes into the game as Caroline Parsons picked up a loose ball near midfield and passed ahead to Kelly Finn who dribbled in to the top of the 18-yard box and sent a shot into the right side of the goal past Brockport's Liz Durfee (Williamson,
NY/Williamson). Finn was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.

Five minutes later, Nazareth nearly took a 2-0 lead when Parsons tapped in a loose ball in front of the Brockport goal but an offsides call nullified the goal.

Early in the second half, Brockport applied offensive pressure when senior Jill Neidlinger (Burt, NY/Newfane) headed a ball from 10 yards out that was saved by Nazareth goalie, Hillary Simon. Neidlinger had another shot tipped just wide of the net a minute later and on the ensuing corner kick Brockport's Meagan McGregor (Ridge, NY/Longwood) redirected the corner kick wide of the net near the far post.

Late in the second half, Nazareth had a second goal called back due to an offsides and with 12 minutes remaining, Rachel Cushman fired a long shot that ricocheted off the cross bar before being cleared by the Brockport defense.

Durfee finished with eight saves for Brockport while Simon made three saves for Nazareth.
