ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Sara Cavanaugh (Hastings-on-Hudson/Hastings) ended her collegiate career in grand style by leading the Cortland Red Dragons to the ECAC Div. III Upstate New York Tournament championship. Cavanaugh (below right) followed her 17 points in last night¹s semifinal win against Oswego with a game high 18 points in leading Cortland (24-6) to a 65-53 win against its rival Red Dragons from Oneonta.
Cortland broke this game open early in the second half when they
took its six-point halftime lead and turned it into a 15 point lead
in the first five minutes. Junior Ali Canale (Oswego/Oswego)
seven of her 11, second half points during the opening run.
Canale finished the game with 15 points and a game-high 10 boards.
Cortland's lead ballooned to 21 points on a layup by junior Kristin Ciccone (Long Beach/Long Beach) at the 9:17 mark.
A Pair of free throws by junior Shannon Weir (Milford/Milord) with 3:19 left got Oneonta (20-9) as close as 11 points at 61-50, but the Red Dragons couldn¹t cut the lead to single digits. Weir finished the game as one of three players in double figures for Oneonta with 10 points.
Sophomore Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) led the hosts with 12 points.
Cortland jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the opening five minutes of the game including seven points by Cavanaugh.
Oneonta countered with a 12-2 run of its own powered by eight points off the bench by junior Kerri Swails (Vestal/Vestal) to give the hosts its first lead at 14-12. Swails would finish the first half with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor.
After the score was tied again at 16-16, Cortland reasserted itself and put together a 10-2 run to take a 28-18 lead en route to a 28-22 advantage at the break.
