Coaches Choice
Jennifer Sobuta, Brown University
Senior, Maynard, Mass.
Scores from the week:
Vault:
---
Bars: 9.125
Beam:
9.775
Floor Exercise: ---
All-Around: ---
Sobuta stepped up in a huge way for the Bears at the University of Arizona on Friday. She was told at the end of last season that she didn't need surgery on her ankle, so spent all summer rehabbing. Towards the end of the first semester the doctor changed his mind and said she'd be better off with surgery. She was extremely frustrated knowing she could have done the surgery months before and now doing it so late, it was going to jeopardize her final season with Brown. She had a cortisone shot last week because scar tissue has prevented her from making a full recovery from her surgery. She has been limited to bars and only does her dismount in competition. On Friday, her ankle was feeling better and she competed an incredible beam routine. She had not even done a full beam routine since USAG Nationals last April! She worked the beam as if she had been able to practice consistently and showed no signs of weakness. She put up a huge 9.775, the highest score for the Bears in the entire meet.
